Airfreight demand improves in January

The international aircargo sector rebounded in January, with demand for freight climbing 28.3% from a year ago, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Aircargo volumes rose 3% from the previous month and 7% above the December 2008 low as businesses moved to restock their inventories, IATA said.

IATA chief executive Giovanni Bisignani said Asian carriers showed an improvement in airfreight volumes and their European and North American counterparts lagged behind.

"We are starting to see some encouraging signs in demand, albeit with large differences among the regions," Mr Bisignani said.

"Unfortunately, the constraints of the archaic bilateral system limit airlines from being able to respond as normal businesses to market opportunities."

Mr Bisignani urged governments to negotiate open markets.
