Sydney Marina Contracting has been chosen to complete a temporary cruise facility for the port of Newcastle as talks continue about a permanent terminal.

The group will refurbish the Channel Berth on Dyke Point as part of the $2.6m project.

New South Wales minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay said the state government was in discussions with Newcastle City Council about a possible permanent terminal.

The Channel Berth is to handle cruiseships in the interim and works will include new wharf decking and dolphin piles, repairing concrete and carrying out minor roadworks.

The work will be finished before P&O cruiseship Pacific Sun arrives in September.

Fifteen cruiseships are expected to call at the port in the 2010/11 season.
