ITF tackles Tonga ship over crew pay
The International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has branded Tonga-flagged general cargoship Hakula as "little more than a flag-of-convenience vessel" over the pay rates for the Tongan component of her crew.
ITF assistant coordinator in Australia Matt Purcell said Tongan seafarers were paid $38 a day or $1140 a month, which was almost half the minimum wage guaranteed in ITF agreements.
